MOB is located on the grounds of Christ Episcopal Church in Bay St. Louis, MS. Christ Church is situated on 8 acres of beach front property, dotted with majestic Live Oak trees. |

On August 29th, 2005, Hurricane Katrina washed ashore, leaving devastation and destruction in her path. From this terrible storm, Camp Coast Care was founded on the site of Coast Episcopal School in Long Beach, Mississippi as a distribution center, medical clinic, and a place to come when they had no other place to look for help. As the needs of the Mississippi Gulf Coast changed, so did Camp Coast Care and now it serves as a construction partner to help rebuild what had been destroyed 3 years ago. With a change in need came an influx of volunteers as well as outreach from the youth to come and help citizens affected by the storm. There was a tremendous amount of interest in youth volunteer opportunities, and Lutheran Episcopal Services was able to answer that call with the help of Christ Episcopal Church in Bay St. Louis, Mississippi. Mission On the Bay was created as an outlet to allow youth to come and inject their energy into the recovery process that this area so desperately needed. We started with a concrete slab, tents, and a whole lot of love from volunteers that were ready to do what they could to help. Since its fruition, MOB has changed dramatically: tents were replaced with huts, fans were replaced with A/C units, and cooking has moved from one trailer to another, but one thing that hasn’t changed are the volunteers that come down to help and come again and their love for this community. |
