In case you have not heard or read it somewhere,  LESM's Coast Recovery Camps - Mission on the Bay and Camp Victor - are closing at the end of August, marked by the Fifth Anniversary of Katrina.

Indeed, the reality of our camps closing is an occasion for sadness.  We wish it were not the case -- not for our clients, for our staff, for the communities we serve nor for YOU, our volunteers!   Having been the recipient of generous grants from ERD, LDR and countless donations for the first two to three years after the Storm, those monies have become but a trickle.  The time that has lapsed since Katrina, the downturn in the economy and the reality of other disasters, including the BP Oil Spill, have played significant roles in drawing funds in different directions.  Thus, the fiscal responsibility has surpassed our abilities and our current economy does not show signs of relenting.

All of that said, there are some movements afront that are trying to raise funds to keep "close-out" construction crews on board for another six to eight months to finish the work we have begun in our respective communities.  It would take in the realm of $35,000 per camp ($70 K total) to keep small crews on the ground in Jackson and Hancock Counties. If these funds are raised, it MAY be possible to house and coordinate small groups of volunteers through the fall of 2010.  The camps would still close and the majority of the Coast staff would no longer serve with LESM, but finishing the projects we have begun would have some potential. August 13 is the final deadline for the close-out construction donations. The numbers below indicate how much each camp still needs to raise in order to continue through the fall. As you can see the clock is ticking! Please donate today by calling either camp.

In the meantime, plans are in place to mark the close of this season in Coast recovery and rebuilding with two CELEBRATIONS of ministry.  VOLUNTEERS, Staff from years past, support folks & ALL are invited...
