Volunteers do make a difference, and they are needed now as much as ever!

Volunteers are essential to the success of LESM's Recovery Camps by enabling our organization to carry out our mission of serving those at risk, responding to their needs, and rebuilding and restoring family and community.

Recovery Management Camps

Currently, LESM manages two volunteer construction camps (Mission on the Bay and Camp Victor) that collectively can accommodate 500 persons. Volunteer services have been and remain the “fuel” for cost effective housing reconstruction and other recovery work.

With more than 55,000 volunteers contributing more than 2.2 million service hours, valued at more than $43million, our camps have rebuilt/constructed 534 houses and provided case management services to more than 3,200 persons.

The level of devastation continues to be tremendous, and full recovery is expected to take years. You can help by offering support and/or volunteering your time. Plan a trip to the Mississippi Gulf Coast with your family, friends, church or organization and help to rebuild homes, assist with the case management, and/or work in the camp site - office, kitchen, etc.
Volunteer Opportunities
Projects

The most visible part of our organization is our rebuilding program, which has assisted thousands of Mississippians with cleaning and repairing their homes after Hurricane Katrina.  All our rebuilds go through intensive case management and evaluation, ensuring our labor and materials are used wisely.  Still, the efforts of our staff would be lost without the hard work and dedication of our volunteers.
Rebuilding Homes

Most volunteers work on rebuilding homes in Jackson, Harrison and Hancock Counties.  On a project site volunteers may find themselves working on a variety of tasks including, but not limited to: framing, insulating, hanging and finishing drywall, roofing, painting interior and exterior walls, installing trim and molding, moving debris or furniture, landscaping, etc.  Although it is not necessary for every person in your group to be skilled at construction, the week tends to be more enjoyable and productive with at least a few skilled construction leaders to guide and teach other volunteers on site.
Camp Maintenance

The Recovery Camps operate as a community.  As such, volunteers are asked to help out with the maintenance of camp facilities including the bathrooms, showers, dorms, lounge, dining hall, warehouse and tool crib.  We ask every volunteer to be flexible and willing to help with serving meals, cleaning, organization of supplies in our warehouse, cooking meals for other volunteers and even building new structures within camp such as dorms.
